Maison Saclay: demonstration project (illustration photos).
Four types of project we can study
These examples are possible needs, not client projects: nothing is promised before your request is studied.
Websites
Present a business, its services and its work, receive requests or offer tailored features.
Examples, scope and quote
Examples of needs (not delivered work)
A showcase site for a craftsperson or a shop
A page to ask for a quote or an appointment
A space to present one's work or catalogue
What we study and design
How the pages are organised and what content to show
The forms that are useful and how the site will be updated
To prepare a quote, we need
Your business and your audience
The pages you want, your texts, photos and logo
An existing site to take over, if any
Business software and apps
Organise information, follow an activity, manage files or centralise operations.
Examples, scope and quote
Examples of needs (not delivered work)
Follow jobs, customers or orders instead of a spreadsheet
Manage files with statuses and reminders
Bring scattered information together in one place
What we study and design
Who uses the tool and for what
The information to record and who can access it
To prepare a quote, we need
How you work today (spreadsheet, paper, another tool)
What costs you time
The people concerned
Scripts and automation
Process files, avoid repetitive typing, produce documents or connect tools.
Examples, scope and quote
Examples of needs (not delivered work)
Sort and rename files following rules
Turn an export into a table or a document ready to send
Copy data from one tool to another
What we study and design
The task step by step and how often it happens
The files or tools involved, and the error cases to plan for
To prepare a quote, we need
A concrete example of the task (file, screenshot)
How often it comes back
The tool or software used, and whether it can be accessed
Computer networks
Study the needs for connection, Wi-Fi, access and the organisation of a network.
Examples, scope and quote
Examples of needs (not delivered work)
Premises where Wi-Fi does not cover every room
Separating guest Wi-Fi from the team's
Organising access to computers, printers and shared files
What we study and design
The floor plan, the number of devices and users
The access needs, the existing equipment and a proposed network diagram
To prepare a quote, we need
A plan or description of the premises
The number of users and devices
The current Internet access and equipment, and the problems noticed
A concrete example: Maison Saclay, a hotel website Demonstration project
Maison Saclay is a demonstration project: a hotel website with booking, management and network. It is not a client hotel; photos, prices and data are examples.
The context
The needs it covers :
Present the hotel, its rooms and its services
Let guests book online
Follow bookings, orders and requests
Offer Wi-Fi and a phone in the rooms
The visitor's path
Each feature is marked according to what was checked:Observed run locally and seen on screenIn the code present in the code, not run (no real booking or notification)Documented described in the project documentation, hardware not tested here
ObservedThe home page, then the list of accommodations (room, suite, penthouse) with filters and sorting.
ObservedA page per accommodation: photo gallery, amenities and a price calculated for the chosen dates.
ObservedTo book, the site asks to create an account or sign in; the restaurant presents its menus.
In the codeBooking checks the dates, looks for a free room among the hotel's rooms, calculates the total and saves it as “pending”; the establishment is notified by message and e-mail, then confirms or cancels.
In the codeRoom service: a meal order linked to the guest's room (page reserved for signed-in guests).
Accommodation page and price by datesThe restaurant: its menus
Guest area: sign-inAdministration: sign-in
Management and network
ObservedA guest area with sign-in, and a protected administration page (we only saw the sign-in screen).
In the codeThe administration has six tabs: bookings, contacts, orders, room inventory, statistics (bookings and revenue per month) and Wi-Fi.
DocumentedGuest Wi-Fi: a captive portal on the hotel's access point queries an authentication server; the guest enters the room number; connections are followed in the administration.
DocumentedTelephony: one phone per room, calling reception from each room, and voice messages sent by e-mail.
